Countertops are one of the few kitchen decisions where the differences are practical rather than a matter of taste. It is worth understanding them before you fall for a slab.
Quartz
Engineered quartz is non-porous, which means no sealing and very little worry about staining. Colour and pattern are consistent from one end of the slab to the other, so what you approve is what arrives. It does not love direct heat, so trivets stay in use. For most families this is the straightforward choice.
Granite
Granite is natural stone, and every slab is genuinely unique. That is the appeal and also the thing to plan for, because a sample the size of a postcard tells you very little about a slab three metres long. It wants sealing periodically and rewards it with a surface that handles heat well.
Laminate
Laminate has moved on a great deal, and modern patterns and edge treatments are convincing. It is by far the most affordable option and perfectly sensible in a rental, a utility room or a kitchen where the budget is better spent on cabinetry. It will not take a hot pan and it cannot be repaired if it chips.
Questions worth asking yourself
How much cooking actually happens here. Whether anyone in the house will remember to seal a surface. Whether you want consistency or you want character. And where the seams will fall, because on a long run that is a design decision, not a technicality.
